Grandmother’s Flower Garden by J.P. Forbes

The quilt of the month for August is Grandmother’s Flower Garden made by Mrs. J.P. Forbes in 1935. it was donated to the historical society by Mary Haskell-Hansen in 2003.
This style of quilt has roots in England. The earliest known hexagon quilt, as they were originally known, made in America dates to 1807. In the 19th century they were known as Mosaic quilts, Honeycomb quilts or Six-sided Patchwork.
A Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt usually contain a center hexagon that is yellow, circled by six colorful printed or solid hexagons with another row of 12 hexagons around that.
